Announcing "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Storybook?"

GREAT NEWS! I am officially underway with “Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Storybook?”, the third volume in the Mystery Science Storybook series! What's that, you may ask? It's a series of graphic novels that reimagines classic bad movies (and more than a few good ones) into satirical, illustrated bedtime tales! Read more about it by clicking on the link in beneath the banner! But anyway, 4 out of 144 pages have been completed. Yay comics, right?

NOT SO GREAT NEWS, though, is that making comics is a time consuming and expensive endeavor. In order for me to bring about the best quality product, I will need to devote, on average, 14 hours a day to writing, drawing and refining the story and artwork. At the end of a typical productive day, I will have finished 2 to 4 complete pages, which accounts for only 1% - 2% of the project as a whole. In order to do this, I would have to make it my full time job. But, at the same time, I have to eat, pay bills, and meet other obligations related to the project. This is where YOU come in!

Last year we had a successful Kickstarter for the first Storybook, and it was an awesome success. But that money went very quickly and I ended up having to pay out of pocket for a lot of things, including reward fulfillment. Hard lessons in the independent comics racket were learned in 2015, and one of them was that I need a steady flow of income to make this happen and not just a one-time cash in. This is why I have moved my fundraising over to Patreon, a crowdfunding website provides an ongoing stream of revenue to keep the series alive and kicking.

Here's how it works: donors can choose to donate any amount they wish per chapter. Right now is that once we reach the $500 per chapter goal, new chapters will be published every few weeks on Sugar Ray Once we hit $1,500 per chapter, it will change to one chapter per calendar month. When we hit $3,500, it will switch to a new chapter every two weeks, and will also turn into a monthly donation recurrence instead of per-chapter to avoid overcharging. And if we are somehow able to reach $5,000, it will turn into a daily web comic strip.

Once 12 full chapters have been completed, they will be collected, put together and published on the Amazon Kindle and physical copies will be made available for purchase (and sent for free to those who donate in some of the higher brackets,) and a new volume will begin!

I have set up some fun (and realistic) prizes for anybody who chooses to support to the cause of keeping the Storybook series alive! Just head on over to for all those details. This is only the initial announcement of the project and the Patreon, as there is a much larger awareness campaign brewing for the next few weeks. So please, if you can, lend a hand and lets keep this whole thing going.

Thanks so much!
- Sugar Ray Dodge
